LAKE CHARLES – The McNeese women's tennis team remained perfect in Southland Conference action Saturday morning as the Cowgirls defeated Sam Houston State, 6-1, to notch their fifth consecutive win in front of its home crowd at the Nancy Hank Tennis Center.
 
With the victory, McNeese (10-4, 3-0 SLC) is now one of three league squads to remain undefeated in SLC play, joining New Orleans and Southeastern Louisiana. For the fourth year in a row, the Pokes have won 10 or more matches in a season, tying a program best set back in 2004.
 
There was no time wasted in doubles play as the Cowgirls received the first point of the match with wins on Courts 1 and 3. The team of Julia Kral and Charoline Erlandsson clinched the point with their fourth consecutive victory as a combo.
 
In singles, Hannah Brett picked up her seventh straight win with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Sam Houston State's Mila Milanovic before the Bearkats responded with a victory on Court 5 to cut the lead to a 2-1 score.
 
The Cowgirls did not fade away, however, as Sarah Jurakova survived a three-set dual with Ema Barkovic with a comeback 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory.
 
Freshman Giovanna Fioretti clinched the match point from the top spot as she fought back from a set down to defeat Fabienne Gettwart 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 to hand the Cowgirls their third straight conference win.
 
Kral racked up another win in the No. 2 spot in three sets while Vivien Borbely took the sixth position to round up the match.
 
The Pokes will be back in action Sunday as they face off against rival Lamar beginning at Noon. Fans in attendance will be served with free pizza and refreshments.
