Cowgirl Netters Top Lamar, 5-2; Remain Perfect in SLC

LAKE CHARLES – Sophomore Hannah Brett notched her eighth consecutive singles victory Sunday afternoon as she helped lead the McNeese women's tennis to a 5-2 win over Lamar at the Nancy Hank Tennis Center to remain undefeated in Southland Conference action.

The Cowgirls (11-4, 4-0 SLC) now sit atop of the league standings with four victories thanks to a dominant run of six matches without a loss. McNeese has placed itself among the elite in the conference with a 65-24 overall singles mark for a league best .730 winning percentage.

Brett, a sophomore netter, leads the squad with 12 singles victories on the year and is 9-1 in her last ten matches. She has become the main component for the middle of the lineup with consistent results. She has done her best work from the No. 5 and 6 spots where she is a combined 11-2.

With the Cowgirls clinching the doubles point to gain the early advantage, Brett began singles competition with a dominating 6-3, 6-1 victory in the No. 4 spot over Lamar's Talissa Merchiers.

The Cardinals cut into the lead with a win the sixth spit but sophomore Sarah Jurakova stretched the lead with a 6-2, 6-1 win on Court 3. Freshman Giovanna Fioretti, once again, wrapped up the clinching point in the top spot as she took care of Katya Lapayeva in a 6-1, 7-5 decision.

Fioretti and Jurakova join Brett and junior Julia Kral as the only Cowgirls to enter double-digit singles wins this season.

Charoline Erlandsson picked up the last point for the Cowgirls on Court 5 with a three-set win over Stephanie Marchena 6-4, 4-6, 10-5.

Kral fell in three sets in the No. 3 spot to end the match.

McNeese will be home again two weekends from now as it host a pair of key Southland Conference matchups. The Cowgirls will face off against A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday at 11 a.m. and will wrap up the homestand with Incarnate Word on Sunday beginning at the same time.
