Tennis Preps For Pair Of SLC Weekend Matches

LAKE CHARLES – The McNeese women's tennis will return home for a pair of Southland Conference contests this weekend as the Cowgirls get set to face Stephen F. Austin on Saturday followed by a match with Northwestern State on Sunday. Both contests are set for an 11 a.m. first serve.

Sunday's match with Northwestern State will serve as Senior Day as the Cowgirls honor Klaudia Gawlik and Anastasija Trubich for their dedication on and off the court.

McNeese (12-6, 5-2 SLC) looks to overcome a two-match skid last week with losses to league-leading Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and a road contest at Abilene Christian.  The Pokes own a 3-1 record in league matches played at the Nancy Hank Tennis Center.

Sophomore Hannah Brett owns a team-best 15-3 singles record and will put an 11-match winning streak on the line over the weekend. Brett is a combined 14-2 in the No. 4 and 5 spots. McNeese owns a 75-32 singles record as a squad.

Stephen F. Austin (10-7, 4-3 SLC) dropped its last league match to A&M-Corpus Christi on Tuesday in a 7-0 loss. The Ladyjacks are 1-2 in SLC road contests with a big win over Northwestern State in Natchitoches.

Denise Maxl leads SFA from the top spot with seven singles wins while Vanesa Calvo Pardo holds a team-best 11-5 record, including a 5-2 mark in conference play. The Ladyjacks are a combined 51-44 in singles play.

Northwestern State (7-10, 3-3 SLC) struggled in the early part of the year but has begun the process of getting back into rhythm having won six of its last 10 matches. The Lady Demons have played only two SLC matches on the road this season, having lost to Central Arkansas and Abilene Christian. NSU will play at Nicholls the day before facing off against McNeese.

The Lady Demons have three singles players with double-digit wins, led by Polina Ivanova, who owns a 10-2 record. Natalya Krutova leads the team from the No. 1 spot and has recorded six wins this season.

The doubles portion of Northwestern State's contests find the Lady Demons with a 22-17 combined record. The team of Polina Mutel and Iryna Vardanian has won five matches in a row while the combo of Ivanova and Krutova are 6-1 in SLC play.
