Softball Falls 5-2 at #12 LSU

Box Score BATON ROUGE—McNeese softball couldn't overcome a three run first inning deficit against 12th ranked LSU here Tuesday at Tiger Park as the Cowgirls' five game winning streak came to an end with a 5-2 loss.

McNeese was held to two hits, one each coming from Taylor Goree and Shanice Hagler. Hagler and Marisa Taunton picked up one RBI apiece. Vincent took the loss, falling to 12-3 on the year after giving up five runs, four earned on 11 hits, four walks and four strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings. Jamie Allred came in the game to relieve Vincent and pitched to one batter.

LSU (37-13) scored three runs on six hits in the first inning as Vincent gave up hits to the first four LSU batters. Singles by Sandra Simmons, Emily Griggs, and Bianka Bell loaded the bases for Sahvanna Jaquish. Jaquish doubled down the left field line that gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead. Jaquish scored on a single to left by Kellsi Kloss for a 3-0 LSU lead.

Jaquish struck again in the bottom of the second inning to extend the LSU lead to 4-0 with a one out single through the left side that scored Griggs. Griggs reached base with a single to third.

McNeese (33-11) avoided the shutout with its first run of the game n the fifth inning. Vincent led the inning off with a walk before Goree broke up Carley Hoover's no-hitter with a single to left. Both runners moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by Hagler. Justyce McClain loaded the bases on a fielder's choice then another fielder's choice by Taunton brought Vincent home for the Cowgirl run. With Piancastelli at the plate with two outs and runners on first and second, McClain was caught trying to steal third to end the Cowgirl threat.

LSU got the run back in the bottom of the fifth when pinch runner Akiya Thynes scored when Piancastelli's throw back to Vincent in the circle sailed into center field allowing Thynes to come home from third for a 5-1 LSU lead.

McNeese made things interesting in the top of the seventh when Tori Yanitor led the inning off with a walk. An LSU error allowed Vincent to reach first and both players moved up a base on a wild pitch. Following a pop up to first by Goree for the first out, Hagler singled to left and moved into scoring position while Yanitor scored to cut the lead to 5-2. McNeese twice had the tying run at the plate but failed to score when Justyce McClain flew out to third and Marisa Taunton grounded out to Hoover for the final out of the game.

LSU was led at the plate by Bianka Bell's three hits. Simmons, Griggs, and Jaquish all had two hits apiece. Jaquish knocked in three of the five Tiger runs including a double that scored two.

McNeese will return to Southland Conference play this weekend when the Cowgirls travel to Lamar for a three game series beginning with a single game at 6 p.m. Friday night. A doubleheader is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday.
