BATON ROUGE – The McNeese women's soccer team used a collective effort to post a dominating 6-1 victory over Southern University Friday evening to remain perfect on the year.
With the win, the Cowgirls moved to 3-0 overall while the Jaguars fell to 0-2 on the season. McNeese has now outscored its opponents 10-2 in three contests.
Junior
Savannah LaRicci fired the first shot with a goal in the 10
th minute of action assisted by junior
Kayla Goedicke. The Cowgirls upped their lead after sophomore
Nola Prickett scored in the 25
th minute to make it a 2-0 score.
Freshman
Rachel Palet finished off the half with her first career goal as she received a pass from
Hannah Sutherland and
Sara Ortiz that gave McNeese a 3-0 lead at the break.
Southern cut the lead to a 3-1 score following a penalty kick to start the second half but Goedicke cushioned the Cowgirls' lead again in the 60
th minute of play with an assist from senior
Bettina Brulhart. Brulhart helped McNeese extend its lead a minute later as she helped LaRicci score her second goal of the evening for a 5-1 Cowgirl lead.
Taylor Trent scored McNeese's final goal in the 78
th minute for a 6-1 lead that would hold until the final buzzer. Trent was assisted by
Gabi D'Alesandro and
Dayna Garcia on the play.
McNeese led the offensive effort with a 24-4 advantage in shots while lead the Jaguars in corner kicks, 5-1.
LaRicci's multiple goal effort was her second of the season and now leads the team with four total.
Cowgirl goalkeeper Bri Lovett played all 90 minutes in her first start of the year between the posts and made one save on four shots faced. She is now 1-0 on the year.
Sutherland led the team with four shots taken on the night while Brulhart led with two assists.
