LAKE CHARLES – McNeese football will be wearing a combination of four different football eras this Saturday when the Cowboys host Nicholls at 6 on Saturday.
Â
The jerseys will be on sale to the public on Thursday morning for $125 and will be available for pick up next Monday following the Nicholls game. Call the McNeese ticket office at 337-562-4MSU or you can go online at
www.McNeeseSports.com to make a purchase.
Â
The shoulder and sleeves of the jerseys feature blue and gold stripes. This is from the very first McNeese football team in 1940 although the McNeese colors were purple and gold up until the 1970 season.
Â
Also on the front of the jersey above the number will be a McNeese M logo with a cowboy hat hanging on the M. This resembles the logo head coaches Jack Doland and Ernie Duplechin had on their coach's shirts and also the midfield logo throughout the 1970s and 80s.
Â
The helmet features three different eras – the 1960s, 70s and 80s.
Â
The word "Pokes" is positioned in the front on top of the facemask. It was during the 1960s when the Cowboys first started being referred to as "Pokes."
Â
A helmet decal depicting a bucking horse and rider donned the helmets beginning in 1970 and has been a fixture and primary logo to the present day after going through several different transformations.
Â
The final throwback piece on the helmet features a solid blue stripe down the middle that was worn in the late 70s to early 80s.
Â
The team will wear blue and gold striped socks, a throwback to what the Independence Bowl teams wore in 1976, '79 and '80 and Pokes will be featured on the back of the jersey for the first time instead of Cowboys.
