LAKE CHARLES – The McNeese women's tennis squad fought hard but in the end suffered a 4-0 loss at the hands of a tennis powerhouse Baylor team Sunday afternoon to complete its weekend road trip.
 
The Cowgirls fell to 1-2 on the season while the Lady Bears improved to a perfect 2-0 following a shutout win over UT-Rio Grande Valley earlier in the day.
 
Baylor used the doubles portion of the match to start off with a 1-0 lead as the team of Hannah Brett and Charoline Erlandsson dropped a 6-0 loss to Jessica Hinojosa and Angie Shakhraichuk from the second spot while Vivien Borbelly and Stella Carra fell to the combo of Rhiann Newborn and Jazzi Plews, 6-2, on Court 3. The No. 1 duo of Giovanna Fioretti and Sarah Jurakova were deadlocked with Theresa Van Zyl and Karina Traxler, 3-3, when the doubles point was called.
 
In singles, Newborn defeated Fioretti, 6-1, 6-1, in the first position to go up by two over the Cowgirls while the Baylor extended its lead to a 3-0 score with Shakhraichuk's 6-2, 6-2 victory over Erlandsson in the fifth spot.
 
The match was clinched on Court 2 as the Lady Bears' Van Zyl defeated Jurakova, 6-2, 6-1.
 
Brett preserved her 17-match singles winning streak although she was locked in a tense battle with Jessica Hinojosa, who entered the match ranked 117^th in the nation. Brett's winning streak now stands as the longest in the country.
 
Borbely and Carra's matches went unfinished as well due to the match being called in favor of Baylor.
 
McNeese returns to action next weekend when it makes its way back to Texas for matches against UTSA Saturday, Jan. 28 followed by Texas State on Sunday, Jan. 29.
