Tennis Dominates SLU In Conference Opener, 6-1

LAKE CHARLES – The McNeese women's tennis squad started its Southland Conference slate on a high-note with a 6-1 drubbing of Southeastern Louisiana Saturday at the Nancy Hank Tennis Center.

The Cowgirls (5-6, 1-0 SLC) have now won their last four league openers dating back to the 2014 season. McNeese has won four out of its last five contests, with two of those victories coming within the confines of the Hank Tennis Center. The Lady Lions dropped to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
 
McNeese and Southeastern fought each other close throughout the doubles session but it was the Cowgirls who picked up the first point with wins on Courts 1 and 2. Vivien Borbely and Charoline Erlandsson defeated Lucia Bustamante and Natalie Duran 6-2 before the team of Sarah Jurakova and Hannah Brett clinched the point with a 6-4 victory over SLU's Dalina Dahlmans and Fleur Holtkamp.
 
In singles, it was McNeese's show all the way as Givoanna Fioretti played past Holtkamp in the first position with a 6-4, 6-0 win before Jurakova defeated Dany Raygadas 6-1, 6-3 to up the Cowgirls' lead to a 3-0 mark over the Lady Lions.
 
It was the racket of Charoline Erlandsson that clinched the match point for McNeese as she took down Natalie Duran 6-3, 6-2 in the sixth spot. Erlandsson is now 6-4 in her last 10 singles matches played.
 
The Cowgirls added to their lead with wins on the third and fourth courts as Brett pushed her winning streak to five matches while Borbely picked up a three-set win in her respective spot.
 
McNeese continues its conference schedule on Saturday, March 4 against New Orleans before stepping out of league play to take on Alcorn State on Sunday, March 5 and Bowling Green on Wednesday, March 8. All three matches will take place at home.
