Pokes Cruise To 9-2 Win Against Nicholls

LAKE CHARLES – Senior left-hander Austin Sanders worked seven innings to earn his second win of the year Friday afternoon while the McNeese baseball team erupted for six runs across the first three innings to cruise to a 9-2 victory over Nicholls at Joe Miller Ballpark.

The Cowboys, who remain perfect at home this season and have pushed their home winning streak to 14 straight dating back to last year, improved to 16-6 overall and 7-0 in the Southland Conference. The Pokes are now in sole possession of first place in the league standings as of Friday evening.

Nicholls fell to 13-9 overall and 5-2 in the league following Friday's loss.

The two squads will meet for game two of the weekend series at 3 p.m. Saturday at The Jeaux. Fans can follow the action live on Twitter @McNeeseBaseball as well as the Live Stats and Video link on McNeeseSports.com

Sanders (2-1) limited the Colonels to two runs (one earned) on six hits in 7.0 innings with one walk and a season-high nine strikeouts. McNeese collected 13 hits, including a two-out three-run homer by catcher Dustin Duhon in the second frame and a no-doubter by third baseman Matt Gallier in the seventh.

Nicholls broke out in the first inning as Gavin Wehby grounded out and allowed Ethan Valdez to score from third following a Cowboy error to make it a 1-0 game.

The Pokes responded with a two-out double from second baseman Joe Provenzano, who drove in two runs on the gapper. Provenzano led all Cowboy hitters on the night with two hits and two RBI.

Duhon's home run in the second inning extended the McNeese lead to five runs in the second. The shot was Duhon's first career homer as a collegiate player.

Nicholls cut into the lead in the third but it was left fielder Shane Selman who plated another run to make it 6-2 after three frames.

Will Fox and Robbie Podorsky each drove in a run in the sixth to extend the lead to an 8-2 score. Podorsky pushed his hit streak to a team-best 15 consecutive games on the season.

Gallier provided the final run of the game as his solo homer was his seventh of the season and the 17th in his career.

Right-hander Peyton McLemore came on in the eighth to relieve Sanders and gave up no runs and only one hit. McLemore has a 0.00 ERA through 9.1 innings this year.

Nicholls' Cole Stapler took the loss for the Colonels having surrendered eight runs on nine hits and two walks in 5.0 innings. Nicholls used three bullpen relievers and allowed one run in 4.0 frame.
