Errors Plague Pokes In First SLC Loss, 10-2

HAMMOND – Errors and miscues proved to plague the McNeese baseball team Friday evening as the Cowboys fell to Southeastern Louisiana, 10-2, at Pat Kennelly Diamond.

The two squads will finish out the series Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. The series was altered due to a chance of inclement weather in the area on Sunday.

The loss handed McNeese its first conference defeat on the year as the Pokes dipped to 18-8 overall and 9-1 in league play while the Lions improved to 17-9 on the season and 6-4 in SLC action.

Sophomore Shane Selman hit his fourth home run of the season, driving in the only two runs of the contest, while Joe Provenzano turned in a multiple hit contest with two hits to help pace the McNeese squad that notched five hits, but committed five errors in the loss.

Robbie Podorsky's team-best hitting streak was halted at 18 consecutive contests, as the outfielder was hitless in four at-bats. Matt Gallier and Dustin Duhon captured the only other hits in the game.

Austin Sanders (2-2) took the loss for the Pokes despite allowing only two earned runs out of the seven scored during his 3.0 inning outing off of six hits and three walks. He struck out three batters in the process.

SLU's Mac Sceroler (5-0) was credited with the victory for the Lions after tossing 6.0 innings and surrendered just two runs off of five hits and five walks. He fanned four batters along the way.

A pair of errors spelled trouble for McNeese in the first inning as the Lions too the lead with a quadruple of runs scored. All runners who reached base due to the errors were able to score highlighted by Ryan Byers' two-RBI double to make it a 4-0 contest.

After extending its lead to seven runs over the Cowboys in the third inning, Southeastern surrendered a tater as Selman's two run shot in the top of the fourth cut the lead to a 7-2 score.

McNeese committed another error in the seventh inning to allow a run to score before Byers lifted a two-run bomb over the center field wall to stretch the Lions' lead to a 10-2 score.

Southeastern hit nine times in the game while limiting McNeese to five hits. Both team's left nine stranded on base.
