THIBODAUX—McNeese women's tennis stayed focused and played smart here Saturday in its 6-1 regular season finale win over Nicholls. The Cowgirls end the regular season 12-10 overall and 7-4 in the Southland Conference and with a three match winning streak heading into the Southland Conference Tournament April 28-30 in Beaumont, Texas.
"I'm very happy of the way we handled today's match," said head coach
Helena Besovic. "This was a true team win. We knew Nicholls was going to put up a fight and we were ready. We stayed focused throughout the entire match and stayed focused as well," Besovic added.
For the third match, McNeese took the early lead by winning the doubles point. The Cowgirls top doubles team comprised of
Sarah Jurakova and
Hannah Brett defeated Lingfeng Gu and Clemence Krug 6-4 before
Charoline Erlandsson and
Vivien Borbely defeated Mariia Kozachok and Changwei Wei 6-4 and no. 2 to clinch the doubles point.
The Cowgirls continued their dominance in singles to win five of the six matches to go onto pick up the win.
McNeese won five straight singles matches when
Stella Carra,
Phonexay Chitdara, Brett and Jurakova picked up wins at no. 6, no. 5, no. 3 and no. 2, respectively to take a 5-0 lead.
Carra defeated Andrea Mastrippolito 6-1, 6-0, Chitdara defeated Wei 6-0, 6-0, Brett defeated Ambika Pande 6-2. 6-2 and Jurakova defeated Krug 7-6, 6-0.
With the match already in hand, Nicholls picked up their only win of the day at the no. 1 singles before Erlandsson came away with a three set 7-5, 5-7, 10-8 win over Kozachok at the no. 4 spot.
