BEAUMONT, Texas—McNeese women's tennis picked up a huge Southland Conference win over Lamar (13-7, 5-3 SLC) here Saturday by a 5-2 score. With two Southland Conference matches remaining on the Cowgirl schedule, this win could have big implications on the conference tournament seeding.
McNeese (10-10, 5-4 SLC) opened the match by picking up the doubles point to jump out to a 1-0 lead.
Charoline Erlandsson and
Vivien Borbely defeated Talisa Merchiers and Stephanie Marchena 6-4 at the no. 2 doubles for the first doubles victory before
Sarah Jurakova and
Hannah Brett sealed the doubles point with a 6-4 win over Katya Lapayeva and Anna Spengler at the no. 1 doubles.
Lapayeva picked up the Cardinals first point of the day with a 6-1, 6-0 singles win over
Giovanna Fioretti. The Cowgirls went onto win the next four matches at the no. 3, 5, 6 and four singles and clinched the match along the way.
Brett gave the Cowgirls a 2-1 lead with her 6-4, 6-4, no. 2 singles victory over Jasmin Buchta. Phoenix Chitdara picked up a 6-1, 6-3 win at the no. 5 singles over Merchiers before
Stella Carra sealed the overall match win with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Marchena at the no. 6 singles. Erlandsson picked up the fifth Cowgirl point in a come from behind 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 win over Sanja Jolic at the fourth single.
McNeese will conclude its weekend action with an 11 a.m. match at Sam Houston State Sunday.
