CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas-- McNeese volleyball ended its three game road trip through Texas here Saturday with a hard fought 3-1 (21-25, 25-18, 23-25, 20-25) loss at league leading Texas A&M-Corpus.
McNeese (11-8, 3-2 SLC) ends its three match week with a 2-1 record after wins at Abilene Christian and Incarnate Word prior to today's match.
"Credit Corpus Christi-they scrambled, dug, and covered tremendously well today," said head coach
Ashleigh Fitzgerald. "When we play a team like that, you can't fail to convert on any easy opportunities, and we did that a few too many times today. Overall, we are happy to have this road trip behind us and are looking forward to getting back to our gym," Fitzgerald said.
The Islanders opened the match by taking the first set 25-21 before the Cowgirls came back to even the match at one set apiece with a 25-18 second set win.
In the third set, the Islanders jumped out to a 10-3 lead but the Cowgirls chipped away at the lead behind a 15-5 to take an 18-15 lead. TAMU-CC would tie the set at 19 all but two straight kills by Spree gave McNeese a 21-19 lead. The set would go through two more ties with the last at 23 apiece. Two straight kills by the Islanders would give them the 25-23 third set win and a 2-1 overall lead.
The Islanders jumped out to a 13-8 lead in the fourth set and the Cowgirls got as close as two points (17-15) but the Islanders would go on to outscore the Cowgirls 8-5 the rest of the way to win the set and the match.
Despite missing on several opportunities, the Cowgirls ended the match with a .227 hitting percent, 65 digs and seven service aces.
Sophomore
Shanna Spree had another good match, leading the Cowgirls with 16 kills and a .484 hitting percent. Spree had one error in 31 attempts.
Keegan Nelms ended the match with 10 kills, 13 digs and three service aces.
Angela McGownd also had 13 digs with
Madison Fontenot and
Adison Giambrone picking up 12 and 11, respectively.
Alexandra Aguilera led McNeese with 25 assists.
McNeese returns home for five straight matches beginning with a 7 p.m. match against Abilene Christian on Thursday, Oct. 5.
