Cowgirls Win Behind Big Night by Keely Morrow

Box Score

LAKE CHARLES- The McNeese Cowgirls dominated the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in Southland Conference women's soccer action Friday night in a 3-1 victory behind goals from Keely Morrow, Havana Johnson, and Mariah Ruelas.

With the win, the Cowgirls improve to 6-2-1 in league play, 12-5-1 overall, while the Islanders fall to 5-7-3 overall and 2-5-2 in the conference. The victory also bumps McNeese into a tie for third place in the league standings with Houston Baptist.

McNeese found the back of the net twice in the first half. The first of the two came in minute 15 by Keely Morrow, her fourth on the year, after she sent a laser of a shot into the top left corner of the net, with Rachel Palet assisting on the goal.

"I saw the ball being switched over to Rachel (Palet) and right when she got it she one touched it to me," said Morrow. "Once I got the ball I saw that the defense was coming up hard, so I had to one hit it one time and got it on frame."

Twenty-two minutes later, Mariah Ruelas scored the Cowgirls second goal of the half and her third on the year off a double assist by Juna Suppan and Keely Morrow.

Morrow finished the game with one goal, one assist, and three points from only one shot on goal.

In the second half the Cowgirls extended their lead to 3-0 after Havana Johnson scored in the 69th minute, one touching the ball in to the net right in front of the goal off a perfect pass by Alexis Rodriguez who was credited with the assist.

With the goal, Johnson earns her seventh goal on the season breaking the tie with Morgan Middleton for the team lead in goals. She also broke a four-way tie for fourth in the conference in goals, giving her sole possession of fourth.

With six minutes left in the match, the Islanders broke up the shutout after a goal by Mariah Ramon, the first goal given up by McNeese goalkeeper Emma Roccaforte in two matches.

With the win the Cowgirls tie their win total from last season and the program record for wins in a season with 12.

"Getting to 12 wins is a big testament to these girls because they've won some games that no one expected them to win, they really earned it," said head coach Drew Fitzgerald. "It's big to have this kind of success year after year and we will continue to build and grow, but it's nice to put together back to back years like this."

This is the first time McNeese has put together back-to back double-digit winning seasons since the 2007-2008 season.

They will look to break the single season win record on Sunday when they play host to Houston Baptist at 1 on Cowgirl Field.
