Box Score LAKE CHARLES – Cowgirl Tennis has done it again. The McNeese women's tennis team defended its home-court on Saturday against UTSA, taking down the road-runners 5-2.
The Cowgirls have now won their first three of the 2018 spring season, staying undefeated at home at the Nancy Hank Tennis Complex.
Starting the day with success was doubles duo Charoline Erlandsson and Phonexay Chitdara. In the three spot, the two Cowgirls defeated UTSA's Ivana Ilic and Charleen Tiwari (6-1). Following suit was Sarah Jurakov and Hannah Brett, who defeated Denisa Ibrahimovic and Kylee Kato from UTSA with the same score.
Rounding out doubles competition and complete the sweep was Giovanna Fioretti and Marija Mastilovic, who were able to come out on top, taking down Roadrunners Laura Cabrera and Sonio Madronal (4-3).
In singles play, Jurakova finished first in the number two spot, defeating Ivana Ilic in straight sets 6-2 and 6-1. In the fifth spot, Erlandsson rose victorious against UTSA's Kato, taking her down 6-1 and 6-2 just the same.
Leading the team as the number one, Fioretti clinched the match win with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Denisa Ibrahimovic.
Chitdara defeated Madronal 6-1,6-2 in the number sixth spot, finishing fourth in the order. She would be the final Cowgirl to win on the day.
Finishing fifth and sixth respectively, Brett and Mastilovic were the only Cowgirls to fall so far this season. Brett was defeated by Laura Cabrera of UTSA (6-2, 6-3). Roadrunner Charleen Tiwari then defeated Marjia Mastilovic in three, 2-6, 6-4, and finally 10-2.
The Cowgirls continue their weekend home series tomorrow, wrapping up the weekend with a Sunday afternoon match against UL-Lafayette with a 1 p.m. start time.
