Box Score HAMMOND – The Cowgirls will return home sporting a 2-0 record in the Southland Conference after defeating the Southeastern Louisiana Lions 7-0 on Saturday, March 4
th.
McNeese (6-1) started off the day by winning the first doubles set.
Charoline Erlandsson and
Phonexay Chitdara defeated Southeastern's (3-6) Katya Cornejo and Dany Raygadas 6-1.
Giovanna Fioretti and
Marija Mastilovic would go on to lose the only set of the day for the Cowgirls. The Southeastern La. duo of Dalina Dahlmans and Ximena Yanez would defeat Fioretti and Matilovic by a score of 6-2.
Mirroring yesterdays doubles matches against UNO, it was up to
Sarah Jurakova and
Hannah Brett once again to secure the point for the Cowgirls. Brett and Jurakova would win the set and point 6-3 over Jiva de Veer and Fleur Holtkamp to secure the team point for McNeese.
In singles play Jurakova would be the first to finish her match and secure McNeese its second point. Jurakova defeated Holtkamp 6-3 in the first set before blanking the Lion by a score of 6-0.
Chitdara would finish second and defeated Yanez by a score of 6-1 in both sets.
Brett would finish third in the third spot and put Southeastern's Raygadas away 6-1 and 6-4 in consecutive sets.
Clinching the victory for the team would be former Southland Player of the Week Erlandsson. She would defeat Dahlmans 7-5 and 6-2 to secure the fourth point for the Cowgirls and secure a team victory.
Mastilovic would secure McNeese its fifth point in the closest singles match of the day. Mastilovic would defeat the Lions Ceci Mercier 6-3 in the first set before squeezing out a 7-6 victory that included her winning a tiebreaker 7-2.
Finishing last in the number one spot would be Fioretti and Holtkamp. Fioretti secured the match sweep for the Cowgirls 6-3 and 6-4 to give McNeese its seventh and final point of the day.
The Cowgirls will head back to Lake Charles to host conference foes Northwestern State on March 10 and Stephen F. Austin March 11.
