Tennis to Honor Seniors on Sunday

LAKE CHARLES - The McNeese Cowgirl tennis squad will look make history on Sunday when it attempts to clinch at least a share of its first-ever Southland Conference regular season championship when it hosts Nicholls beginning at 1 at the Nancy Hank Tennis Center. 

The Cowgirls (14-3, 9-1 SLC) are tied with Northwestern State and Corpus Christi in the loss column in the league standings. NSU and Corpus still have to play each other but not until next Saturday. The Cowgirls' match against the Colonels (11-9, 2-7 SLC) will wrap up McNeese's regular season. They'll open play at the SLC Tournament April 27 in Beaumont.

McNeese can lock up the No. 1 seed with a win and a loss by NSU. The Lady Demons played at UCA on Saturday and will host Corpus Christi on April 21.

Cowgirl seniors Hannah Brett and Sarah Jurakova will be competing in their last home match of their McNeese careers.

In 2016 Brett was named first team All-Southland Conference at the number four position and was also All-Louisiana first team. She garnered first team All-Conference honors the following year at the number three. Brett is a two-time Southland Conference player of the week and sports a 29-10 conference record in singles matches.

Jurakova earned Louisiana Freshman of the Year honors in 2015 while also winning an individual conference championship at the number five spot. In 2016 Jurakova garnered second team All-Conference and All-Louisiana. She is also a two-time player of the week with a conference singles record of 31-8.

As doubles partners Brett and Jurakova were named second team All-Conference last year playing at the number one position and have an overall record of 22-7 while going 15-3 in conference match-ups.

Sundays match-up will be the last regular season conference match for the Cowgirls. They will return to action April 27 in Beaumont for the Southland Conference tournament.
