Box Score AUSTIN, Texas – McNeese's first-ever trip to the NCAA Women's Tennis Tournament wasn't a "glad we're there" moment as the Southland Conference regular season and tournament champion gave the fifth-ranked and No. 6 national seed Texas Longhorns all they could handle before falling 4-0 with two singles matches suspended with the Cowgirls leading.
The loss ends a remarkable for the Cowgirls who finished the season with an 18-4 record while capturing the program's first-ever league title.
"I'm very proud of our team effort today," said head coach
Helena Besovic, the Southland Conference Coach of the Year. "We competed hard and were right there with them throughout the entire match."
The Cowgirls dropped the doubles point but with great fight.
Giovanna Fioretti and Marjia Mastilovic fell 6-3 in the No. 2 competition while Charline Erlandsson and
Phonexay Chitdara dropped a 6-2 decision as Texas won the doubles point.
In the No. 1 doubles spot,
Sarah Jurakova and
Hannah Brett battled the nation's 55
th-ranked doubles team in Petra Granic and Bojana Markovic, trailing just 4-3 before the match was called due to Texas winning the point.
Fioretti handled the top-ranked player in the country fairly well in the No. 1 singles in Bianca Turati, dropping the first set 6-4 and was down 4-3 in an unfinished match.
In the No. 2 singles, Jurakova dropped the first set to in a tiebreaker No. 30 Anna Turati 7-6 (7-2) then lost the point 6-1 in the second set that ended the entire match.
Texas took a 2-0 lead after Granic defeated Brett 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 3 singles and took a 3-0 lead after winning the fifth set 6-4s, 6-0 when Marta Perez-Mur defeated Erlandsson.
Chitdara forced a third set in the No. 6 singles to Dani Wagland, and trailed 1-0 in the third before the match ended. She posted a 6-3 win in the second set after falling 6-3 in the first.
And in the No. 4 singles, Mastolovic held a 6-5 lead in the second set before it was ruled unfinished as she was rebounding from a 6-3 loss to Markovic in the first set.
"We showed that we belong at this level and are leaving Austin with our heads up," said Besovic. "We're proud of everything we have accomplished this season."
