LAKE CHARLES – McNeese football finished up practice No. 11 of the spring on Friday afternoon after Thursday's session was washed out due to the weather.
The Cowboys dressed in shells (helmet, shoulder pads, shorts) and worked out in Cowboy Stadium for the first time this spring as they prepare for Saturday's second scrimmage of the spring that is set to begin at 11 a.m. The scrimmage is closed.
McNeese continues to work on implementing the new offensive and defensive schemes and playbook and look forward to Saturday's scrimmage which should run anywhere between 80-110 plays.
"Getting better every day, that's what we're looking for," said head coach
Sterlin Gilbert. "We've shown a lot of improvements but there's still a lot of room to get better."
Last Saturday, the Cowboys' offense rolled up nearly 450 total yards and scored six touchdowns while the defense picked off three passes and sacked the quarterback 11 times in a controlled setting.
"Both sides made some plays and that was good to see," said Gilbert.
"I think both offensively and defensively we're doing some good things," said
Lawayne Ross. "There's a lot of competition out there and that's good to have."
Also on Saturday, McNeese football will hold its Junior Day for the Class of 2020. The event will get underway at 9 a.m. in the McNeese H&HP Complex. Those in attendance will then get to attend the Cowboys' scrimmage at 11.
"We're looking forward to having those 2020 kids on campus here tomorrow," said Gilbert. "There's a lot of talent out there and to have them on campus meeting with our coaches and players then going out to the scrimmage is the first step."
McNeese will hold its annual spring game on April 13 at noon in Cowboy Stadium. The event is open to the public and free of charge. The Parapoke skydiving team is expected to parachute into Cowboy Stadium prior to the game, and during the contest, members of the 75
th Anniversary team will be recognized.
