LAKE CHARLES – McNeese football took the practice field for the first time of fall camp on Friday morning, getting in a two-and-a-half hour workout that focused on picking up where the spring left off.
Â
The team looked to be in better physical shape and conditioned, a testament to the hard work put in during the summer.
Â
"We set an expectation during the summer and coming out of the spring to continue through the summer," said first-year head coach
Sterlin Gilbert. "I like the way we started. I thought our energy was up there. I thought our effort was up there.
Â
"We'll get in the meeting rooms this afternoon to go over things and come out here tomorrow better than we were today and continue to progress throughout camp."
Â
There were several good plays made as well, one by wide receiver transfer
Rhashid Bonnette who jumped up and reached over a defender to haul in a touchdown catch.
Â
"We had some guys show up today and make some plays," said Gilbert. We just need more of that, a continuation of that. Just stack them on. We challenged those guys to continue to stack the good days, back-to-back."
Â
Defensive back
Andre Lee had an interception during skell drills while the quarterback tandem of
Cody Orgeron,
Matt Keller,
Matt Gardner and
Cade Bartlett did a good job of getting rid of the ball and finding their targets.
Â
The team will be back on the field Saturday morning at 9.
