LAKE CHARLES- Sophomore Delana Friesen and freshman Olivia Broussard picked up their first career goal Sunday afternoon to help lead the Pokes to a 3-0 victory over Prairie View A&M.
Anna Watson also found the back of the net to earn her third goal of the season.
McNeese (2-1-0) picks up their tenth straight win against Prairie View (0-3-0) in program history. The Cowgirls are undefeated playing the Lady Panthers and handed Prairie View its third straight loss of the 2019 season.
The Cowgirls bench played a crucial role in Sunday's matchup with a heat index of 102 degrees. All 26 players that dressed out saw the field at some point in the contest.
At minute 13 Watson found herself in a 1v1 situation with the keeper, after a bad touch by a Lady Panther defender, and placed the ball low on the back post to take the lead 1-0.
Friesen checked in to the game in the 18th minute and five minutes later moved the lead to 2-0 by finishing the cross on a right foot volley assisted by Watson.
Broussard scored in the 36th minute when Rachel Young's shot was blocked and Broussard went on to send the ball past the keeper to put the Cowgirls up 3-0 before the half.
The Pokes will be back in action when they go on the road this weekend to visit La Tech on Friday and Arkansas on Sunday.
QUOTING HEAD COACH DREW FITZGERALD:
"We weren't thrilled with any part of our game today, other than getting up 3-0. I didn't think our starters performed up to their level, I was very proud of our bench today. Other than fatigue playing a role in the starters performance, Prairie View is a very good team and we've got to be ready to play good teams."
QUOTING JR. MIDFIELDER ANNA WATSON:
"I'm happy with the result although it could have been better, we just have to connect passes and understand each other better. I think LSU brought our team together and our effort is there, but now we have to focus on the technical things."
