LAKE CHARLES- The McNeese Cowgirls soccer team (9-4-2, 6-2-1) was defeated 3-1 at home Friday evening against Incarnate Word.
The Cowgirls knew they were going to get each opponents best effort during the ladder part of conference play, and Incarnate Word did just that.
Incarnate Word scored two goals via headers off of free kicks, just past the efforts of true freshman goalie Jackie Kelly. Kelly recorded three saves. The Cowgirls tied the game at one in the 24th minute, Rachel Young's late season emergence continued as she scored the lone goal. The match was 2-1 through 75 minutes before UIW's Isabella Beletic scored her second goal of the game to put a halt to the comeback efforts of McNeese.
The Pokes did a good job penetrating the defense as they recorded five corner kicks and had a 58-42 percent advantage in time of possession. The Cowgirls also outshot UIW 11-7. The Cardinals of Incarnate Word simply took advantage of the chances they were given and that would prove to be the difference.
McNeese Head Coach Drew Fitzgerald:
(On the match)
"They (UIW) are a really good team and they kicked our butt the first 45 minutes of the game. You give a good team 45 minutes and in which we let them essentially jump us and we did not match their energy. They had a great game plan and played really well, they scored two beautiful goals. Credit goes to them for winning but we can't give away 45 minutes of energy and effort."
(On moving ahead)
"Sunday, the regroup is easy, we know what's ahead of us. It's just one game, everything we want to accomplish is ahead of us and we will get ready like we do for every other match. I'm looking forward to it."
