Harding wins gold, Jedkins bronze at SLC indoor meet

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – McNeese Cowboys middle distance runner Matt Harding's 800-meters time of 1:50.69 came just .28 seconds from matching the school record but was still fast enough to win the gold medal on the final day of the 2021 Southland Conference Indoor Championships here Monday.
 
Harding, who clocked a personal best time of 1:52.96 in Sunday's preliminary round, bettered that by more than two seconds on Monday.
 
Cowgirl jumper Malaiya Jedkins won a bronze medal in the women's triple jump with a mark of 40-4.75 to join Harding as the two McNeese athletes to win medals on the day.
 
Other Cowboys to score points on the day saw Josh Raphael finish fifth in the 60-meters with a time of 6.92 to claim four points. Kobe Nevills finished in sixth place for three points in the 400 meters with a time of 48.13; Ronnie Jackson in seventh place in the triple jump with a leap of 44-8 to pull two points; and Joey Croft placed seventh in the mile run at 4:19.26 for two points.
 
For the Cowgirls, Dreunna Washington scored in both the 60-meters and 200m, accumulating a total of nine points between the two events. She placed fourth in the 200-meters with a time of 24.70 for five points and placed fifth in the 60m with a time of 7.66 to gain four points. Shania Anthony scored two points with a seventh place finish in the 800-meters with a time of 2:19.38.
 
The Cowgirl 4x400-meter relay team made up of Jedkins, Washington, Anthony and Victoria Pierson finished fifth with a time of 3:53.83.
 
"A valiant effort this weekend," said head coach Brendon Gilroy. "Definitely not the result we expected but we've been through a lot and wasn't able to prepare like we would have liked for a conference meet. With the year we've had I'm just glad we were able to compete. We had some solid performances and won a couple of medals. Now it's time to get ready for the outdoor season."
 
Stephen F. Austin won the men's championship with 105 points followed by Southeastern Louisiana at 100, HBU 77.5, A&M-Corpus Christi 73, Abilene Christian 65, Central Arkansas 56, Sam Houston 54.5, New Orleans 40, Northwestern State 35, Incarnate Word 29, McNeese 21 and Lamar 6.
 
On the women's side, Abilene Christian won the title with 107 points, edging out Northwestern State who finished with 103. SFA followed with 92, UCA 52, New Orleans 48, Southeastern Louisiana and Sam Houston 43, Incarnate Word 42, HBU 40, AMCC 38, McNeese 26, Nicholls 17 and Lamar 10.
