Chambers named SLC Defensive Player of the Week

FRISCO, Texas – McNeese defensive end Isaiah Chambers has been named this week's Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday morning. The award is presented by Hercules Tires.

Chambers, a Houston native, produced perhaps his best game as Cowboys in Saturday's 21-7 win at Northwestern State. The senior recorded three sacks and 4.5 tackles for a loss in the contest as he led a defense that held the Demons to just 33 yards rushing for the game.

Two of his sacks happened in the same series, when in the third quarter, he sacked NSU quarterback Kaleb Fletcher for a loss of 13 yards on a first down play. Two plays later, he recorded another sack on Fletcher going for a 7-yard loss.

Chambers will enter the bye week ranked fourth in the Southland Conference with 4.5 sacks on the season.

Incarnate Word quarterback Cameron Ward was named the league's Offensive Player of the Week while Sam Houston's Jequez Ezzard garnered special teams honors.

McNeese wide receiver Trevor Begue picked up honorable mention offensive honors after he caught eight passes for 165 yards and a touchdown. Begue matched a career-high in receptions while recording a new career-best in yardage.

Chambers is the third Cowboy to receive weekly honors this season. Both quarterback Cody Orgeron (offensive player of the week) and kicker Jacob Abel (special teams) on Feb. 22 for their performance in the season opening win at Tarleton State.
