SOC: McNeese Defeats UIW On Senior Day

LAKE CHARLES—McNeese women's soccer gifted its 2022 seniors with a 3-0 Southland Conference win over Incarnate Word here Sunday on Senior Day.
 
With the win, McNeese improves to 5-6-4 overall and 3-3-4 in league play. The loss drops UIW to 3-8-3 overall and 2-5-2 in the SLC.
 
Junior Rachel Young took the Cowgirls' offense into her own hands today scoring two goals and assisting on the other Cowgirl goal. The two goals by Young gives her a team high five on the year.
 
Young's first goal that gave McNeese a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute came when UIW's goalie attempted to kick the ball down the field but it hit the shins of a UIW player and the ball headed the opposite direction towards the Cowgirls' goal. Young beat both players and was able to kick the ball into a wide open goal.
 
Freshman Alexis Theiler scored her first career goal in the 37th minute off a defection from UIW's goalie who saved shot from Young and ended up in front of Thieler on the opposite side of the goal for the open shot to give McNeese a 2-0. Young and and Matilde Tesgaard were both credited with an assists. The Cowgirls would hold a 2-0 halftime lead until Young struck again for her second goal of the game. Young attempted a shot and the ball was deflected by UIW's goalie and fell down just in front of Young who then struck to ball into the net for the score.
 
Senior goalie Kelly Hines picked up her fifth career win and second career goal with the win. Hines was credited with four saves on the day.
 
The Cowgirls played several players today and at one time in the game had seven freshmen on the field as head coach Drew Fitzgerald slowly substituted his seniors off the field for a curtain call.
 
McNeese has two road games left on the schedule to close out the regular season.  The Cowgirls will travel to Southeastern on Sunday, Oct. 23 for a 5 p.m. game before closing out the regular season at Texas A&M-Commerce on Friday, Oct. 28.
 
The Southland Conference Tournament is scheduled for Nov. 2-6 in Natchitoches.
