VB: Cowgirls End Losing Drought Against TAMU-CC In Thrilling Five Set Match

LAKE CHARLES—McNeese volleyball snapped a 17-match losing streak and picked up its first win over against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi since the 2010 season here Thursday night in a thrilling 3-2 (25-18, 22-25, 25-16, 18-25, 15-11) Southland Conference win over the preseason favorite Islanders. The win also extended the Cowgirls winning streak to three matches.
 
McNeese (8-12, 4-2 SLC) ended the match with a .342 hitting percent on 54 kills and 16 errors while Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (4-16, 4-2 SLC) hit .161 with 61 kills and 32 hitting errors.
 
The Cowgirls came out aggressive in the opening set behind four kills from McKenzie Moore who ended her night with a career high 12 kills. Moore was one of four Cowgirls to tally double figure kills. Sanni Rantanen also had 12 kills while Mikayla Christiansen and Kendall Glueck both had 10 kills apiece. Both Moore and Rantanen both ended the match with a .455 hitting percent. Rantanen and Glueck both led all players with five blocks apiece and Glueck was credited with 12 digs to complete her double double.
 
The Islanders evened the match with the second set win before McNeese took a 2-1 match lead with a 25-16 third set win. The Cowgirls posted a .250 hitting percent in the set with only two hitting errors.
 
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi responded with the fourth set 25-18 win to send the match to a fifth and deciding set.
 
Just like most of the match, the teams traded points in the fifth set. McNeese broke a 4-4 tie by scoring four straight points to lead 8-4. The Islanders pulled to within one point 9-8 on a Cowgirl attack error before two kills by Dejah Dade put the Cowgirls up 11-8.
 
The Islanders pulled to within 13-11 on a Leah Stolfus kill before back-to-back kills by Glueck put the match away.
 
McNeese also got solid performances from Mia Perales who ended the match with a double double (27 assists, 10 digs), Bailey Tillman (18 digs), Lizzy Low (15 digs).
 
TAMU-CC placed three players in double figure kills with Kyndal Payne leading all players with 17 kills. Stolfus had 13 kills and Ella Literell ended with 11 kills. Faith Panhans dished out 44 assist and Carissa Barnes led all players with 21 digs.
 
McNeese will travel to Houston this Saturday for an 11 a.m. match against Houston Christian. The Huskies (13-6, 5-1 SLC) dropped their first conference match of the season in a 3-1 road loss at UIW earlier tonight.
