CHAMPAIGN, Ill.— McNeese women's basketball's shooting was as cold inside the State Farm Center here Wednesday as it was outside the arena, falling100-38 at Illinois (3-0) in the first of a four game Midwest trip.
McNeese (1-2) struggled from the field, ending the game shooting 15.9 field goal percent (10-63) including 2 of 25 from three-point range.
Le'Shenae Stubblefield came off the bench to lead McNeese in scoring with 12 points. Stubblefield scored eight of her points from the free throw line where she ended the game making 8 of 12 free throws.
Mireia Yespes, came off the bench led the Cowgirls with six rebounds.
Illinois dominated from start to finish as the Illini held a double figure lead midway through the first quarter and never gave up that double figure lead.
McNeese trailed 52-12 at the half and were outscored 48-26 in the second half. The Illini's bench scored 53 points along with 50 points in the paint.
The Cowgirls couldn't find an answer to the post play of Illinois (3-0), who had six players score in double figures.
Geovana Lopes led all players with 13 points and Kendall Bostic ended the game with a double double (12 points, 12 reb.).
McNeese will continue its trip with its next stop at Bradley for a 12 p.m. (CT) game this Saturday, Nov. 19.
1st QUARTER
The Cowgirls struggled from the field in the opening quarter, connecting on 3 of 15 from the field and 0-5 from behind the arc. McNeese also turned the ball over six times ad Illinois scored eight points off those turnovers. Thirteen Cowgirls saw the court in the opening quarter.
2nd QUARTER
Illinois continued its hot shooting and the Cowgirls continued to struggle from the field. Illinois outscored the Cowgirls 28-7 in the quarter to lead 52-14 at the half. The Illini ended the first half shooting 51.4 percent from the field including 54.5 percent from three-point range. The Cowgirls shot 18.8 percent from the field including 0-9 from behind the arc.
Mireia Yespes led McNeese in scoring in the first half with four points.
3rd QUARTER
McNeese scored 10 of their 13 points in the quarter from the free throw line as the Cowgirls shot 71.4 percent from the field. Illinois scored 23 of its points from behind the arc, making 7 of 8 attempts.
4th QUARTER
McNeese outscored McNeese 25-13 in the quarter and hit the century mark on a free throw with 31 seconds left in the game.
