WBB: Cowgirls Fall At Xavier

CINCINNATI, Ohio- Xavier outrebounded McNeese 46-32, scored 23 second chance points, and scored 40 points in the paint in its 84-68 women's basketball win over the Cowgirls Tuesday night.  The game was the fourth and final game of the Cowgirls' Midwest trip that began at Illinois last Wednesday.
 
McNeese (1-4) scored the first basket of the game but trailed 21-17 after the first quarter in which Kaili Chamberlin scored nine points and Divine Tanks came off the bench to score six points.
 
Chamberlin led a trio of McNeese players in double figure scoring with a season high 17 points, with 15 of her 17 coming in the first half.  It's the second straight game Chamberlin reached double figures. She scored 16 against No. 8 Ohio State on Sunday.  Chamberlin ended the game making 7 of 12 attempts including 2 of 3 from behind the arc.
 
Desirae Hansen also scored 17 points which is also her season high.  Hansen was 6 of 17 from the field including 5 of 10 from three-point range. Hansen also led the Cowgirls with four assists.
 
Divine Tanks also recorded a season high with 13 points on 4 of 8 from the field and 5 of 6 from the free throw line. Mireia Yespes led the Cowgirls in rebounds with nine boards while Tanks pulled down seven.
 
Xavier (5-0) led 42-38 at the half with McNeese shooting 43.8 percent from the field and 37.5 percent from behind the arc.  Xavier shot 46.2 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from behind the arc in the first half.
 
The Musketeers had four players score in double figures with Taylor Smith leading all players with 18 points. Aanaya Harris ended the game with a double double with 11 rebounds and 10 assists. Harris was three points away from a triple double, ending the game with seven points.
 
McNeese will take a Thanksgiving break and will return to action next Tuesday, Nov. 29 to host Arkansas State in a 7 p.m. game at the Legacy Center.
 
 
1st QUARTER
McNeese scored the opening basket of the game from a Kaili Chamberlin layup. Chamberlin scored nine of the Cowgirls' 17 first quarter points, making 4 of 6 from the field. Divine Tanks came off the bench to score six first quarter points on 3 of 4 from the field. McNeese shot 47.1 percent from the field and trailed 21-17 after the first quarter.
 
2ND QUARTER
McNeese pulled within two points early in the quarter on a Suzanna Kulinska layup to trail 21-19.  The Musketeers upped their lead to seven points midway through the quarter and the Cowgirls cut the lead to five points a few more times before trailing by seven points (42-35) at the half.  Chamberlin continued her hot shooting in the quarter to end the half with 15 points on 6 of 8 from the field including two 3pointers. McNeese ended the half shooting 43.8 percent from the field and 37.5 percent from behind the arc.  McNeese cut down their turnovers which has plagued them on this road trip, committing only six in the first half.  Xavier scored 24 of their points in the paint, mostly from layups and grabbed 11  offensive rebounds and scored 12 second chance points off those rebounds.
 
3rd QUARTER
Xavier took its first double digit lead at 48-38 early in the quarter.  Xavier held as much as a 14 point lead in the quarter and ended the quarter on a 15-11 run to lead 63-49.
 
4th QUARTER
Xavier held an 18 point lead (75-57) with 2:58 to play but back-to-back three's by Hansen and Guihon cut the deficit to 12 points (75-63) with 2:09 to play.  McNeese fouled the rest of the way in an attempt to get closer but Xavier scored six of their final nine points of the game from the free throw line.
