McNeese aiming for first SLC indoor title beginning Sunday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - McNeese indoor track and field will be looking to win its first-ever Southland Conference team title when it competes at the conference championships beginning Sunday and concluding on Monday.

The meet will take place at the Birmingham CrossPlex and will open up at 8:30 a.m. with the heptathlon and pentathlon. The meet will be live streamed and live results will be available on the Championship Central page.  

According to Collegiate Track & Field Conference Meet Scorer, both the Cowboys and Cowgirls are predicted to finish first with the Cowgirls winning by a wide margin.

Cowgirl sprinter and jumper Dreunna Washington will head into the meet ranked No. 1 in the league in the long jump, third in both the 60 and 200 meters, and is a member of the 4x400 relay team that's ranked second in the conference.

Other Cowgirls ranked No. 1 in their respective events are Malaiya Jedkins in the triple jump and  Janell Fullerton in the shot put. Morgan Talley is ranked second in the triple jump, fifth in the 60-meter hurdles and eighth in the high jump.

A host of Cowgirls are ranked in the top 8 which would garner scoring: 400m - Shania Anthony (7th); 800m - Irene Barreiro-Lopez (6th), Ciara Gilroy (7th); mile run - Ciara Gilroy (6th); 3000m - Aurelia Jepkorir (7th); 60m hurdles - Reagan West (7th); high jump - Jordyn Garriet (6th); pole vault - Maja Gebauer (3rd); shot put - And Torres (7th); pentathlon - Morgan Talley (2nd), Zur'Najah Poullard (7th). The Cowgirls' distance medley relay team is ranked third.

On the men's side, Jalon White will be going for gold in the 200 and 400 meters. The school record holder in the 400 is ranked No. 1 in the event while posting a No. 2 ranking in the 200.

Distance runner Joey Croft will be out to become a double champion as he's entering the meet ranked No. 1 in both the mile run and the 3,000-meters.

Other Cowboy athletes ranked in the top 8 for scoring include: 60m - Zac Martin (7th); 200m - DaMarion Roane (8th); 400m - Terrill Banks (7th); 800m - Filippo Squassina (5th); mile run - Omer El-Fadl (7th); 3000m - Aaron Gilliam (5th), Evans Kemboi (6th); 60m hurdles - Ronnie Jackson (6th); high jump - Patrick Boudreaux (5th), Ronnie Jackson (7th); pole vault - Hayes Thompson (6th); triple jump - Ronnie Jackson (3rd); shot put - Marcus Francis (5th); weight throw - Tyler Challis (5th), Reilly LeBlanc (8th); heptathlon - Ronnie Jackson (3rd).

In addition, both the Cowboys' 4x400 and distance medley relay teams are ranked No. 2.

Sunday's field events are scheduled to begin with the finals portion of the women's weight throw at 1 p.m. and will conclude with the women's long jump finals at 5 p.m. Opening-day running events begin with the women's 5,000m finals at 12 p.m., immediately followed by the men's 5,000m finals event at 12:30 p.m. Day one will conclude with the women's distance medley relay (DMR) at 6:40 p.m., followed by the men's DMR final at 7 p.m. 

Monday's finals action begins at 10 a.m., with the men's 60m hurdles portion of the heptathlon, one of three events in the multi event, which will be finalized that afternoon with the 1,000m run. In addition to the women's high jump, men's and women's shot put and triple jump will serve as Monday's lone field events. Monday's running event finals open with the women's 60m hurdles at 11 a.m. and conclude with the men's 4x400m relay at 2:40 p.m.
