Softball Opens Conference Play At Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

CORPUS-CHRISTI, Texas – Preseason favorite McNeese softball will open conference play with a three-game series at Texas A&M Corpus Christi this weekend beginning with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Friday, March 25. The series will conclude with a single game Saturday at 12 p.m. Friday's doubleheader will be broadcast on ESPN+ with Saturday's single game on the Islanders Digital Network.  

The Cowgirls are coming off an 8-5 home victory over Southern Miss Wednesday evening.  

Jil Poullard leads the Cowgirls at the plate with a .351 batting average, a .614 slugging percentage, 14 walks, four doubles, three home runs, and is tied with Reese Reyna for a team best 11 stolen bases. Alayis Seneca and Poullard are tied for the most RBIs (14). Josie Willingham leads the team with 23 hits and trails Poullard with a .295 batting average, a .359 slugging percentage. Willingham is tied for second on the team with 16 runs scored.  

Pitcher Shaelyn Sanders (5-0) leads the Cowgirls staff with a 1.84 ERA along with 12 strikeouts in 38.0 innings. With a 3.22 ERA and 71.2 innings of action in the circle, Ashley Vallejo (5-6) leads the Cowgirls with 52 strikeouts. 

Texas A&M Corpus Christi (10-17) is coming off a midweek 9-3 home loss against UTSA on Tuesday. 

The Islanders are led offensively by Pal Egan with a .382 batting average, .724 slugging percentage, 29 hits, 25 runs scored, nine stolen bases, 19 RBI, along with 11 doubles which ranks her fifth in the nation.  

In the circle, the Islanders have used seven different pitchers this season. Beatriz Lara (2-1) leads the pitching staff with a 3.41 ERA in 24.2 innings of work. Grace Gilbert has had the most action in 44.1 innings, earning 29 strikeouts with a 5.05 ERA. 

McNeese has won the last 25 meetings since 2012.
