LAKE CHARLES – First-year McNeese football head coach
Gary Goff and the 2022 Cowboys will open up spring football practice on Tuessday for the first of 15 workouts over the next four weeks.
The Cowboys will practice in shorts and helmets the first couple of practices before putting on the pads. Practice days will be every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday with three scrimmages scheduled for the Saturdays of March 26, April 2 and 9.
All practices are open to the public and will be held in Cowboy Stadium.
"We're excited to finally get on the field with the guys," said Goff. "You really don't have any clue to what you have until you get on the field. The last eight weeks, the team has done a great job and have worked extremely hard. We have over 30 guys benching over 300 pounds. Eighteen guys squatting over 500 pounds. Our average weight-gain across 87 guys, is an average of 10 pounds.
"When you think about it, these young men haven't had an offseason. Have never been through a spring practice and offseason conditioning and lifting program, which is nobody's fault besides the hurricanes and covid.
"We've seen some tremendous gains over the last eight weeks which is due to them actually getting to go through this training program."
The Cowboys return 55 lettermen and 19 players with starting experience.
