Hill Becomes All-Time Wins Leader as McNeese Defeats Nicholls 8-4 in SLC Tourney

LAKE CHARLES - Justin Hill became the winningest coach in McNeese Cowboy history as his Pokes took the new step towards the ultimate goal Friday night. The Cowboys (32-21) defeated Nicholls (26-24) 8-4 in the winner's bracket game at Joe Miller Ballpark advancing McNeese to the semi-finals of the Southland Conference Tournament for the third straight year.

The win was career victory No. 264 for Justin Hill, passing the late Tony Robichaux.

The Cowboys scored eight runs on 14 hits led by Julian Gonzales' 4-4 day, Gonzales hit his team co-leading ninth homer of the season and drove in a pair while scoring three. Brad Burckel went 3-5 with two doubles and two RBIs. Kade Hunter and Andruw Gonzales each homered for the Pokes.

Southland Conference Relief Pitcher of the Year Cameron Foster lived up to his billing as he struck out a career-high 10 batters across five innings of relief. He picked up his 12th save of the season which ties the McNeese all-time single-season mark set by Jordan LeGros in 2011.

Burrell Jones (4-0) recorded the win after entering the game in the first inning out of the bullpen, Jones pitched 3.1 innings allowing one run (no earned) and fanning a pair.

Andruw Gonzales left the yard for the first time in his career to tie the game at two in the second, and Kade Hunter hit his second homer of the tournament to put the Pokes ahead 3-2 entering the bottom half of the third.

An error by the Pokes allowed the Colonels to tie the game at three not long before Kade Morris singled home Julian Gonzales (single) in the top of the fourth and Gonzales would single home Brad Burckel (double) the next frame.

Brad Burckel singled up the middle scoring Braden Duhon (single) and Reid Bourque (single) with two outs and the bases loaded to extend the Poke lead to 7-3 after six.

Julian Gonzales put the finishing touch on his night with a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning.

Tyler Theriot (7-5) took the loss for the Colonels, he allowed seven runs over 5.1 innings on nine hits.
