Cowgirls in position to win title heading into Sunday's finale

HUMBLE, Texas – The McNeese Cowgirl track and field team put itself in a great position to win the 2022 Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field team championships on Sunday when on Saturday, the Cowgirls claimed four more medals and added 46 more points to their total and ending the day with 106.
 
The Cowgirls did well in the running qualifying on Saturday, advancing a total of 10 runners into Sunday's finals – one each in the 100m, 200m, and 400m hurdles; two in the 100m hurdles; two in the 400m dash; and three in the 800m. The Cowgirls will also have two runners in the 1500m finals.
 
The Cowboys had two medal winners on the day and is in third place with 47 points going into Sunday's finale. The Cowboys qualified nine runners to the finals – one each in the 100m, 200m, 110m hurdles, and the 400m hurdles, two in the 400m and three in the 800m. Three Cowboys are entered in the 1500m finals as well.

1, Incarnate Word 76; 2, Northwestern State 56; 3, McNeese 47; 4, Southeastern Louisiana 46; 5, Houston Baptist 36; 6, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 28; 7, New Orleans 20.
 
The Cowgirls:
  • Janell Fullerton won a gold medal in the women's shot put with a season best mark of 53-3.
  • Ane Torres placed fifth (45-10.75, PR) and Ashari Jones seventh (44-1.25) to give the Cowgirls a total of 16 points in the event.
  • Malaiya Jedkins won a silver medal in the triple jump with a mark of 41-2.25 while Morgan Talley finished fifth at 40-6.75 (PR).
  • Earlier in the day, Talley won a silver medal in the heptathlon with 4,961 points.
  • Maja Gebauer added eights points for the Cowgirls with a silver medal finish in the pole vault. Aubrey Weyerstrass added a point with an eighth place finish after clearing 9-10.
  • Grace Sullivan capped the day by scoring a point with an eighth place finish in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 11:53.55, a new PR.
  • Dreunna Washington qualified for the 100m dash with a time of 11.78 and the 200m at 24.50.
  • In the 100m hurdles, both Morgan Talley (13.87, PR) and Regan West (14.32, PR) qualified to the finals. West also qualified in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:06.66.
  • Kayla Harrison (56.82) and Kayla Warner (57.16) qualified in the 400-meters.
  • Three Cowgirls qualified to the finals of the 800m – Danna Diaz (2:14.99), Irene Barreiro-Lopez (2:16.05) and Ciara Gilroy (2:18.42).
 
The Cowboys:
  • Ronnie Jackson rallied on his second to last jump in the triple jump to claim a bronze medal with a PR mark of 48-2. Jackson also qualified to the finals of the 110m hurdles (14.42).
  • Joey Croft won a silver medal in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 9:06.15. James Hyland finished fifth at 9:47.80 to give the Cowboys four more points in the event.
  • Marcus Francis finished fourth in the shot put with a personal record mark of 53-2.25.
  • Sprinter Zach Martin clocked a PR of 10.31 in the 100m dash to qualify to the finals.
  • Two Cowboys advanced in the 400m dash – Jalon White (46.62) and Terrill Banks (48.56).
  • White also qualified for the 200m finals with a prelim time of 21.43.
  • Three Cowboys qualified to the finals of the 800m – Evans Kemboi (1:53.77), Elias Loriposia (1:54.18), and Filippo Squassina (1:55.65).
