LAKE CHARLES- If the first two McNeese volleyball practices on Tuesday are an indication of how the season will go, fans are in for a treat and will love watching this team compete.
Â
There were a few first on Tuesday including first year head coach
Sasha Karelov's first complete team practice as a head coach. Nine newcomers stepped on the court for the first time including two freshmen who took part in their first collegiate practices. The practices also marked the first time volleyball returned to the Legacy Center for its first fall team practice since the 2019 season.
Â
Karelov was impressed and surprised at the same time with her squad following both practices, stating they worked on a little bit of everything, but the focus was on their first touch, passing and communication since there are nine new faces on the team. Â
Â
"From a passing perspective, senior libero
Lizzy Low was focused," said head coach
Sasha Karelov. "She had a good mind set about being intentional on every touch and she kind of set the standard herself from the libero group. She was doing really well with the little stuff."
Â
The Cowgirls will practice twice on Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday and once on Thursday with Saturday being their day off this week. Once classes begin, the Cowgirls will practice either in the afternoon or evenings depending on class schedules.
Â
McNeese will hold a Blue/Gold scrimmage at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 20 with its regular season opener against Alabama on Aug. 26 at the Crimson Tide Invitational.
