Cowgirls 1st, Cowboys 2nd at Cowboy Stampede

LAKE CHARLES – McNeese Cowgirl cross country runners Sorcha Moloney and Pamela Kosgei finished 2-3 in Saturday morning's Lake Charles Toyota/McNeese Cowboy Stampede while Grace Sullivan and Jasmine Perez placed 8-9 to help lead the Cowgirls to a first place finish in the final home meet of the fall.
 
The Cowgirls posted 34 points to edge out Lamar who scored 37 behind Yasmin Austridge's first place individual finish.
 
Houston Christian University finished third with 51 points followed by Texas Wesleyan (109), Texas Southern (151) and Lyon College (155).
 
Moloney, in running her first meet of the season, finished second overall with a time of 18:17.2 in the 5k race while Kosgei clocked in at 18:20.3 to place right behind Moloney. Sullivan ended with a time of 18:54.2 and Perez at 18:59.1.
 
Irene Barreiro-Lopez capped the scoring for the Cowgirls after placing 12th with a time of 19:20.1. Bonnie Andres finished 15th with a time of 19:53.0,
 
One the men's side, the Cowboys placed second behind Rice who recorded 29 points to McNeese's 48. HCU was third with 69 points followed by Lamar (84) and Wiley (149).
 
Junior runner Jacob Kipkogei was the top finisher for McNeese, placing second overall in the 4-mile race with a time of 19:40.5, 30 seconds behind winner Elliot Metcalf of Rice.
 
Gilbert Kimutai and Omer El-Fadl placed 5-6 with Kimutai recording a 19:49.0 and El-Fadl a 19:58.7. Other Cowboy scorers had Elias Loriposia finishing in 18th place with a time of 20:51.6 and Filippo Squassina at 20:59.4.
 
Other Cowboys competing included James Hyland (25th, 21:28.0), Desmond Kiplomo (29th, 21:51.6), and Abdullah Elkhair (30th, 22:07.4)
 
Both teams will be back in action on October 15 when they compete at the Texas A&M Arturo Barrios Invitational in the final meet before the Oct. 28 Southland Conference Championships.
