LAKE CHARLES – McNeese sophomore linebacker
Micah Davey has been named one of 30 finalists for the 2023 Buck Buchanan Award which is giving annually to the nation defensive player of the year in Division I FCS college football and presented by FedEx Ground.
Â
Davey led the FCS in three different statistical categories – total tackles (153), tackles per game (15.3) and solo tackles per game (8.3). His 15.3 per game average set a new McNeese record while his 153 total stops rank as the sixth-most in school history in a single season.
Â
The Baton Rouge native recorded double-digits in tackles in all 10 games on the season and became the first player in school history to collect 20 or more tackles in back-to-back games (20 vs. HCU; 21 at Lamar). The 21 tackles at Lamar were the second-most in a game in school history.
Â
He is one of three players from the Southland Conference to be named a finalist, joining UIW edge rusher Steven Parker and HCU linebacker Jalyx Hunt.
Â
The Buchanan Award, first presented in 1995 and in its 29th season, is named for legendary defensive lineman Junious "Buck" Buchanan, who starred at Grambling State as part of his Hall of Fame career. Past recipients include Dexter Coakley, Rashean Mathis, Jared Allen and Arthur Moats.
Â
All 13 FCS leagues, comprised from 15 conferences overall, are represented by a Buck Buchanan Award finalist. The winner, to be selected by a national voting panel, will be announced at the FCS National Awards Banquet on Jan. 6 in Frisco, Texas – the eve of the FCS championship game.
