HUNTSVILLE, Texas—A RBI single by
Kelsey Gaspard and a wild pitch gave McNeese softball all the runs it needed in the top of the seventh inning in its 2-0 win over Sam Houston Wednesday night to extend the Cowgirls winning streak to four games.
With the win, McNeese improves to 23-10 overall while Sam Houston falls to 13-22 on the year.
After six scoreless innings, McNeese opened the top of the seventh inning with back-to-back singles by
Mariana Torres and
Crislyne Moreno. A sac bunt by
Kaylee Lopez advanced Torres to third and Moreno to second. Gaspard grounded out to shortstop, scoring Torres for the 1-0 lead. Moreno later scored on a wild pitch for the 2-0 lead.
The Cowgirls got another masterful outing in the circle by senior pitcher
Whitney Tate who improved to 11-2 on the year with the three-hit complete game shutout. Tate began the game by retiring the first 11 batters she faced before giving up her first hit of the game. Tate would later give up a single in the fifth and the seventh but the Cowgirl defense kept the runners stranded. Tate ended the game with three strikeouts and didn't allow a walk.
McNeese ended the game with four hits with Moreno leading the way with two hits in three plate appearances. The other singles came from Torres and
Alayis Seneca.
The Cowgirls will return to Southland Conference play this weekend with a three-game series at Lamar beginning with a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Friday. The series will conclude with a single game at Noon on Saturday.
