WTEN: Cowgirls Advance To SLC Tournament Semifinals With Win Over Lamar

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas—For the first time since 2018, McNeese women's tennis will advance to the Southland Conference semifinals following its 4-0 win over Lamar Friday afternoon to improve to 15-5 on the season.  The Cowgirls will face No. 2 UIW at 10 a.m.  UIW defeated Southeastern 4-1 to advance. Live scoring will be provided.

"Incredible performance from our girls today," said first year head coach Gabby Moore.  "They played with so much heart and for each other. We've prepared for this moment all year and all the girls have put in the work and played for each other today.  The character, belief, and the will to compete to the end is what they brought out there on the court with them and we are looking forward to playing again tomorrow."

McNeese opened the match by winning the important doubles point to take the early 1-0 lead.  The No. 3 doubles team made up of Tiana Fox and Maria Wang Martinez won 6-4 and the No. 1 doubles team, Emma-Lou Pommiers and Heta Nuutinen also won 6-4 to clinch the doubles point.

"Doubles has been a struggle for us most of the season but no matter what, they showed up and played with so much discipline and fearlessness.  They came out on top to a team who has a very competitive doubles line up," Moore said.

The doubles point gave the Cowgirls the momentum they needed heading into singles matches where they won three in straight sets to seal the win.

Emma-Lou Pommiers wasted little time in her 6-0, 6-0 win over Feke Tjon-A-Joe at the No. 1 singles to put the Cowgirls up 2-0.

Natalia Ballo gave the Cowgirls a 3-0 lead with her 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5 and Ariane Monlleo Sanchis picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 6 clinched the match for the Cowgirls.

The loss ends Lamar season with an 11-11 record.
