Cowboys hold first scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday

| By:
LAKE CHARLES – The McNeese Cowboy football team is rockin' and rollin' in fall camp, and with nine practices under their belt through the first week-and-a-half of camp, the Cowboys will hold their first scrimmage on Saturday morning at 8 o'clock in Cowboy Stadium.

"I want to get about 30 (plays each) with the 1s and 2s, and 20 with the 3s and 4s," said second-year head coach when asked about his play rundown for the scrimmage. In all, Goff is looking to get around 80 plays in.

A couple of areas that has stood out so far in camp has been the offensive line and the safeties position.

"I think our offensive line is light-years ahead of where they were a year ago," he said. "We redshirted a lot of guys last year. We have good depth there now and the interior guys have played a lot of football. On the defensive side, down the middle, our safeties are tough right now. It's very difficult for us to get them in the wrong area or their eyes in the wrong place. They've done a great job of preventing some big plays."

Goff has stated several times the team now is light years ahead of last year's pace.

"We're probably like at week three of the season. Everybody knows their assignments now. We're able to fine tune some things. We're adding some different tags. We're playing faster than we were this time a year ago. Even the freshmen. Either during the summer or this camp, they've studied and they know their assignments.

"I'd say we're probably about three games ahead of schedule to where we were this time last year."

And of course, the big question is always who will start at the quarterback spot. Both Nate Glantz and Tre Simmons have been in a great competition and have alternated days running with the 1s and Saturday will be Simmons' time.

The Cowboys will practice again on Sunday morning before taking Monday off with it being the first day of classes. On Tuesday, McNeese will move practices from the mornings to later in the afternoons or evenings.

McNeese opens the season on September 2 at home against Tarleton State.
