Cowgirls drop final exhibition to ULM

LAKE CHARLES - In the final tune-up of the season, the McNeese soccer program fell to UL-Monroe 2-0 on Cowgirl Field Saturday evening as both teams prepare for the regular season.

"We just have to keep focusing on putting things together and working on the attacking phase," said head coach Drew Fitzgerald when analyzing the matchup for the season ahead, "It's okay and it reflects on what we've been working on in preseason."

The two teams battled equally for the first half, entering the break tied at nothing each. The Warhawks scored the first goal of the night in the 49th minute before putting the final goal in the net in the 60th minute.

Jackie Kelly, a junior goalkeeper, fought valiantly in the net to ward off ULM throughout the entire matchup. She faced 23 shots in the performance with 15 on goal to earn 13 saves to her name.

"For early in the season, especially in an exhibition against a great opponent, any repetition we get as a team is great," noted Kelly. "Getting that many shots in the game will help me as we head into conference and be able to help dictate and organize the defense."

McNeese hits the road to kick off the regular season against Texas State Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
