Cowgirls fall to Texas State in season opener

SAN MARCOS, Texas – In the first match of the season, the McNeese soccer program fell 3-1 to Texas State on the road at the Bobcat Soccer Complex, ending a six-game win streak against the team Thursday night.

"I thought our team battled all night," said head coach Drew Fitzgerald. "We had a rough few minutes, but the reality is we were better than the last match and that's all we are asking for right now. Compete, support each other, and keep moving forward. Texas State is a good team and we are better for the test they put us through tonight."

After 42 minutes of fighting back and forth in a scoreless battle, senior Rachel Young claimed the first goal of the season for the Cowgirls for a 1-0 advantage. The goal was the first shot of the night as well for the blue and gold.

Texas State heated up after the 70th minute, scoring three goals within a span of 3:02 to give the Bobcats a 3-1 nod over the Cowgirls. The first came at 70:57 to tie it up before the latter two came at 73:38 and 73:59.

Junior Jackie Kelly faced 19 shots on the night while earning four saves. Having started the night with 93 career saves, Kelly moved up to ninth all-time in program history, now sitting at 97.

Joining Young with an attempt on the net was junior Cassandra Romero, earning the second shot for the Cowgirls.
