Cowgirls shut out Alcorn 6-0 in first victory of season

LORMAN, MS - The McNeese soccer program (1-2-0) defeated Alcorn (0-3-0) 6-0 in its first victory of the 2023 campaign, marking the first time the team scored exactly six goals in a game since 2018.

"It's good to get the first win and get it out of the way and have some players have some big nights," said head coach Drew Fitzgerald, highlighting numerous players. "Sunday will be a completely different game so we'll just take this, celebrate tonight, and tomorrow get ready for the next one."

Freshman Morgan Fiedler scored the first goal of the match in the 12th minute to give the Cowgirls an early 1-0 advantage with her first collegiate goal. Shortly after, junior Kaile Kukaua shot the ball in the net in the next minute of play for the 2-0 lead.

After a 20-minute period of scoreless play, sophomore Alexis Theiler ended the streak, connecting with classmate Isabelle Smith for the third goal of the evening at 32:49. Within seven minutes of play, Morgan Schooley, a junior, headed in the fourth and final goal of the half.

Halftime was extended due to inclement weather in the area. Going into the half, the Cowgirls had outshot the Lady Braves 7-0 with five of those being on target.

Kukaua scored her second goal of the evening in the 57th minute of play to make it 5-0 Cowgirls. After helping with an assist, Smith later got her time to shine with a penalty kick goal in the 75th minute.

McNeese will take a day of rest before facing Louisiana Tech at 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon at Robert Mack Caruthers Field.
