WBB: Cowgirls Fall To Southeastern In OT

LAKE CHARLES— Southeastern's Jalencia Pierre's three-pointer rattled around before falling through the net to tie the game at 58 all with four seconds left in regulation, sending the game into overtime.  McNeese's long field goal attempt as time expired fell way short.
 
Southeastern outscored McNeese 19-5 in overtime to walk away with a 77-63 Southland Conference women's basketball victory here Saturday.
 
McNeese (4-13, 0-4 SLC) got off to a hot shooting start and held a 25-7 first quarter lead and led 35-26 at the half.  
 
Southeastern (8-7, 4-0 SLC) outscored McNeese 31-23 through regulation then 19-5 in overtime for the come back victory.
 
The win overshadowed a career high 16 points and six assists by McNeese's Azjah Reeves who was 6 of 14 from the field including two three-pointers.  Reeves also grabbed five rebounds.
 
Mireia Yespes led all players with a game high 26 points and a career high 14 rebounds for her third double double this season.  The 11 rebounds also ties her career high.  Yespes was 11 of 19 from the field including two three-pointers.
 
Emilia Tenbrock, the Cowgirls' leading scorer enter the game, chipped in with 14 points.
 
Southeastern placed four players in double figures with Pierre leading the way with 21 points.  Pierre took over late in the game an into the overtime to score 10 of her 21 points with 5:13 left in the game.   
 
Cheyanne Daniels scored 18 points, Hailey Giaratano scored 12 points and Dijone' Flowers ended the game with 10 points. Daniels and Giaratano both led the Lady Lions with eight rebounds each.
 
 
1st Quarter
• McNeese jumped out to a 14-2 lead in the first four minutes of the game, connecting on its first five shots from the field.
• Cowgirls led 25-7 after the first quarter, making 10 of its 15 shots from the field for 66.7 percent from the field
• McNeese outrebounded Southeaster 16-5 in the quarter
Azjah Reeves scored 11 of the Cowgirls' 25 first quarter points
 
2nd Quarter
• Southeastern outscored McNeese 11-2 with seven of their points coming off seven Cowgirl turnovers in the first five minutes of the quarter
• McNeese turned the ball over just one time in the last five minutes of the quarter
• Southeastern outscored McNeese 19-10 but the Cowgirls held a 35-26 halftime lead
• McNeese shot 40 percent (4 of 10) from the field while Southeastern shot 50 percent (8 of 16)
 
3rd Quarter
• McNeese took an 11-point lead early in the third quarter on a layup by Mireia Yespes
• For the second straight quarter, Southeastern outscored the Cowgirls (14-10)
• McNeese held a 45-40 lead
 
4th Quarter
• McNeese went on about a six-minute scoring drought that started with 3:48 minutes left in the third quarter and ended with a bank shot by Yespes with &;37 left in the game that gave McNeese a 47-42 lead
• Yespes drained a three-pointer with the shot clock going off just as the ball left her hand to give McNeese a 50-42 lead
• On the next Cowgirl possession- it was Yespes again with the turnaround layup and she got fouled. She made the free throw to complete the three-point play for a 53-42 lead.
• Southeastern's Jalencia Pierre drained a long three-pointer with four seconds left in the game and the Cowgirls last chance to win the game fell short to send the game into overtime
 
Overtime
• Southeastern took their first lead of the game since early in the game when the Lady Lions opened the OT with an old fashion three-point play by Dijone' Flowers that ignited an 14-0 run by the Lions before Yespes scored the first Cowgirl points in overtime
• Southeastern went on to outscore McNeese 19-5 in OT.
 
NOTES
Mireia Yespes led all players with 26 points and added a career high 14 rebounds for her third career double double
Azjah Reeves scored a career high 16 points and dished out a career high six assist
Emilia Tenbrock finished the game with 14 points
• McNeese turned the ball over 25 times that resulted in 29 Southeastern points
• Southeastern also outrebounded the Cowgirls 44-39 and scored 44 points in the paint, 22 fast break points and 24 bench points
• McNeese scored 14 points off 15 Southeastern turnovers, eight fast break points and didn't get any scoring from its bench
