FARMVILLE, Va.—In a game that didn't have many bright spots for the McNeese women's basketball team Sunday, Lake Charles native
Paris Guillory was one of them.
The sophomore transfer from Louisiana Tech, came off the bench to lead the Cowgirls in scoring with 12 points and was the only McNeese player to score in double figures in its 81-54 loss to Longwood (7-4) on the final day of the Shirley Duncan Classic. The loss evens the Cowgirls record to 5-5.
Guillory connected on 3 of 7 from the field including two 3-pointers and was 4 of 6 from the free throw line in 19 minutes. Ty Williams and
Avery Young, both scored seven points apiece.
Another bright spot for McNeese was rebounding, where the Cowgirls outrebounded the Lancers 42-37.
Wilnie Joseph and
Mireia Yespes led McNeese with five rebounds apiece.
Yespes, who was named to the all-tournament team was held to two points. Both Yespes and Joseph got into early foul trouble in the second quarter.
After a first quarter that ended tied at 15 apiece, Longwood outscored the Cowgirls 20-6 in the second quarter and opened the third quarter on a 17-2 run to extend its lead to 45-22.
It was another frustrating day on offense for the Cowgirls who ended the game shooting 32.7 percent from the field (17-52) including 5 of 22 from behind the arc and 57.7 percent from the free throw line (15 of 26). The Cowgirls didn't help their cause by turning the ball over a season high 32 times which turned into 35 Longwood points.
Longwood, who ended the tournament with a 3-0 record, shot 48.3 percent from the field (29-60), 36.8 from 3-point (7 o 19) and 61.5 percent (16-26) from the free throw line.
Four Lancers scored in double figures with Amor Harris and Kiki McIntyre leading the way with 16 points apiece. Olivia Bowes added 12 and Otaifo Esenabhalu came off the bench to record a double double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
