LAKE CHARLES – McNeese football will wrap up its second week of spring practices on Saturday when the Cowboys hold their first scrimmage, beginning at approximately 10:30 a.m. in Cowboy Stadium.
The scrimmage will be open to the public.
Saturday's scrimmage will mark the eighth of 15 outings for the team as it reaches its halfway mark. The spring game will be played under the lights on Thursday, March 28, at 6 p.m.
Third-year head coach
Gary Goff is expecting to get at least 30 plays in with both the ones and twos with the threes mixed in. He's also looking at execution on third downs and red-zone situations and if the scrimmage does not provide enough looks, those will be added at the end of the scrimmage.
"We have a lot of depth," said Goff. "Some of the guys that are learning the schemes for the first time, they've been coming along nice. They're learning and excited to be out there. We have a lot more size and a lot more length to us, especially in the secondary and linebacker positions."
Both the offense and defense has been through the install period twice so now, Goff says, is the time for big leaps and adjustments to be made.
"I'm very pleased with the offensive line right now," commented Goff. "They have a lot of experience to them. That's probably the group, on the fly, can adjust the quickest right now."
Following Saturday's scrimmage, the Cowboys will continue practices next Monday and Wednesday from 3:30-5:30 p.m. and Friday from 6-8 a.m. while scrimmage No. 2 is scheduled for next Saturday at 10 a.m.
