Marcus Francis and
Sakari Famous swept the field portion of the weekly awards to both be named Southland Conference Athletes of the Week as announced Wednesday afternoon by the league.
"Both have been working and very consistent throughout the indoor season," said head coach
Brendon Gilroy. "It's great to see it translate to the outdoors now."
Famous, a redshirt senior, won the women's high jump at the Louisiana Classic over the weekend and set a season best mark in the process at 1.80m, coming just 0.04m away from her all-time personal best. Her performance places her atop the conference by a tenth of a meter and places her second in the nation. 0.05m away from the top mark.
Francis, a junior, claimed the shot put title at the Louisiana Classic while earning fourth in the discuss and eighth in the hammer throw. The shot put winning mark of 17.50m puts him atop the conference by over a whole meter and nearly four feet further than second in the league. He currently resides at the 25th best mark in the nation in the event.
The latter threw a personal best in the discuss at 48.62m which is already over a six-meter improvement this season. Francis was able to land a 46.00m mark in the hammer throw to sit nearly consistent with his earlier mark at the Cowboy Relays.
McNeese continues its season at the Rice Victor Lopez Invitational this Friday and Saturday.
