MOBILE, Ala.—McNeese softball picked up a hard fought 3-2 road win over South Alabama Tuesday night to improve to 20-13 overall. South Alabama falls to 17-12-1 on the year with the loss.
With the win, McNeese extends its winning streak to five games and will return to Southland Conference play Thursday and Friday with a three-game road series at Northwestern State.
McNeese took 1-0 lead in the opening frame when
Reese Reyna drew a bases loaded walk to send
Corine Poncho home. Poncho led the game off with a single through the right side.
A RBI single to left by Rylee Bouvier brought
Alexis Dibbley home for a 2-0 lead. Dibbley reached base on a one out double to right center.
South Alabama cut the lead in half in the fourth inning off a solo homerun by Shelby Garrett.
Dibbley got the run back for the Cowgirls in the fifth inning with her third homerun of the season. Dibbley sent the first pitch she saw over the centerfield wall for a 3-1 McNeese lead.
The Jaguars pulled to within 3-2 when Bailey Welch led the bottom of the seventh off with a triple then scored on a ground out. Cowgirl reliever
Lindsay Davis got the next two South Alabama batters to ground out to end the game for her third save of the season.
Dibbley, Bouvier, and
Samantha Mundine all led McNeese with two hits apiece.
Shaelyn Sanders improved to 10-6 on the year with the win. Sanders allowed one run on six hits, one walk, and struck out four in 5.0 innings. Davis allowed one run on one hit with one strikeout in 2.0 innings of relief.
