NATCHITOCHES—A six run fifth inning gave McNeese softball the lead for good, on its way to a 10-8 Southland Conference series opening win over Northwestern State Thursday night in a slugfest that consisted of a combined 22 hits.
The series will conclude Friday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.
McNeese, who improved to 21-13 overall and 6-1 in the SLC, extended its winning streak to six games with the win. NW State falls to 14-21 overall and 2-8 in the SLC.
McNeese combined for 10 runs on 10 hits and 10 RBI. Four Cowgirls (
Corine Poncho,
Samantha Mundine,
Crislyne Moreno,
Rylie Bouvier) all led McNeese at the plate with two hits. Bouvier knocked in half (5) of the Cowgirl runs while Poncho had two RBI.
The Lady Demons took a 2-0 lead in the opening frame on a two-run homerun by Cameron Curtis.
McNeese scored four runs in the third inning with the first run coming off a NW State error then a two out bases clearing double by Bouvier gave McNeese a 4-2 lead.
NW State tied the game at four apiece with two runs in the bottom of the third on its second two-run homerun of the game, this time off the bat of Tristin Court. A single run in the fifth put the Lady Demons up 5-4.
McNeese retook the lead in the fifth inning by scoring six runs on four hits for a 10-5 lead. Bouvier's second double of the put McNeese up 6-5. Bouvier would later score on an obstruction call at plate that gave the Cowgirls for a 7-5 lead. A squeeze bunt by
Mariana Torres scored Mundine for an 8-5 lead before
Corine Poncho hit her 12
th homerun of the season, a two-run homerun for the 10-5 lead.
NW State wouldn't go away that easy as the Demons pulled to within two runs (10-8) with three runs on three hits and one Cowgirl error in the bottom of the six.
After the Cowgirls went down in order in the top of the seventh, NW State's Sophia Livers singled with two outs, bringing the tying run at the plate but Cowgirl reliever
Ryann Schexnayder got Mia Liscano to fly out to left field to end the game.
Lindsay Davis picked up the win in relief of starter
Shaelyn Sanders to improve to 4-5 on the year. Davis allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits, struck out three and walked two in 3 2/3 innings. Sanders allowed four runs (two earned) on four hits, one walk in 2.0 innings. Schexnayder picked up her second save of the season, allowing one hit, faced five batters in 1 1/3 innings.
