McNeese posts blowout victory over Southern

LAKE CHARLES, La. – Conner Westenburg's nearly perfect day propelled McNeese Baseball to a 14-4 run-rule victory over Southern Tuesday night at Joe Miller Ballpark.

Westenburg, a junior, posted a 3-for-4 night while scoring two runs and collecting three RBIs in the process. He was at bat when the winning run, redshirt freshman Easton Dowell, was scored on a wild pitch.

McNeese improves to 25-22, 8-10 SLC, extending its win streak to four games while the Jaguars fell to 20-25, 13-10 SWAC. It marks the second time this season the Cowboys beat Southern to conclude the season sweep.

Max Swenson, a junior, earned his first Division I start on the bump with the Cowboys, making his 13thappearance of the season. Swenson tied his season-high five strikeouts in the outing, not allowing a run on the night.

By taking the game in rune-rule style, it marks the first time in over a year the Pokes earned a run-rule victory in seven innings, the last over New Orleans 11-1 in a Friday night meeting. The Pokes scored nine of their runs in the first two innings with a huge six-run second.

The Cowboys return to the diamond when they host Houston Christian this upcoming Friday through Sunday.
