Davey named Preseason All-American by Phil Steele; 8 Cowboys garner preseason All-SLC honors by organization

LAKE CHARLES – McNeese linebacker Micah Davey added his third preseason All-American honor when on Friday was named to the Phil Steele 2024 Preseason All-American First Team. He's recently been named preseason first team All-American by Stats Perform and FCS Football Central.

In addition, Davey was named the Phil Steele Preseason SLC Defensive Player of the Year as well as garnering first team All-SLC honors by the organization.

Also earning spots on the publication's preseason All-SLC team were offensive linemen Cole Leclair (first team), Dylan Dauzart (second team), and Hayes Creel (third team); transfer linebacker Marques White (second team); transfer linebacker Tristan Driggers (third team); defensive back Levi Wyatt (third team); and transfer punter Finn Lappin (third team).

In 2023, Davey was named All-American by six different organizations, including first team honors by Walter Camp and the AFCA. He also earned second team honors by FCS Football Central, Associated Press, Sports Perform and Phil Steele, and was a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award as the top defensive player in the FCS.

Both Leclair and Wyatt earned preseason All-Southland honors by the league office – Leclair on the first team and Wyatt the second.

Last season Davey led the FCS in three different statistical categories including total tackles (153), tackles per game (15.3) and solo tackles per game (8.3).

His 15.3 tackles per game set a new McNeese single-season record while his 153 total tackles ranked as the sixth-most in a season in school history.

Davey recorded 10 or more tackles in all 10 games including 20 tackles against HCU and 21 at Lamar in the final two games of the season as he became the first Cowboy to record 20 tackles or more in back-to-back games. His 21 stops at Lamar were the second-most in a game in school history.

A 2022 Freshman All-American, Davey will enter the 2024 campaign with 221 career tackles, ranking him just outside the top 20 on the school's career record list.

Leclair will enter the 2024 season riding a 21-game consecutive starts streak as a Cowboy and 35-straight starts in his collegiate career. He led the team last season with 599 snaps played.

Wyatt started all 10 games at cornerback last season for the Cowboys, recording 13 tackles, an interception and a team-high seven pass break-ups.

White is a graduate transfer from Dartmouth where he was a two-time All-Ivy League player while Driggers is a transfer from ULM where he started the last two seasons.

Both Dauzart and Creel started for the Cowboys on the offensive line last season while Lappin comes to McNeese from his hometown of Melbourne, Australia.

The Cowboys will wrap up their second full week of fall camp on Saturday morning at 7 with their first scrimmage. Each unit is expected to get around 35 plays.

McNeese opens its season in two weeks on August 24 at Tarleton State at 2:30 p.m. on ESPN2.
